As coding agents take on a growing share of development work, Databricks argues the database has been the neglected layer of the workflow — and is repositioning Lakebase accordingly.
A single pull request, a single throwaway database. That is the workflow Databricks set out in a blog post published October 8, 2026: every parallel coding agent, and every pull request it produces, runs against its own isolated, ephemeral Postgres database instead of a shared staging environment.
The mechanism is copy-on-write branching built into Lakebase, the company's database service. Under copy-on-write, a new branch shares its parent's underlying storage until an actual write forces a divergence — which is what makes standing up large numbers of near-identical database copies practical rather than prohibitively expensive. Databricks is effectively extending a pattern developers already take for granted in source control, where branching freely and discarding freely is routine. The difference this time is that the thing being branched is stateful infrastructure, not code — historically the layer that resists exactly this kind of disposability.
Databricks' own framing is that the database is an often-overlooked part of the development workflow, and the timing explains the emphasis. Coding agents are taking on a growing share of development work, and they run multiple instances in parallel. Each parallel attempt needs somewhere to hold its schema, its migrations and its test data. Without cheap isolation, teams either serialize their agents or share environments and absorb the collisions.
For platform evaluators, the post positions per-request database branching as a differentiator at a moment when the stateful layer is becoming the constraint in agent-driven engineering. Elastic compute was the easy part; persistent data services are not.
The broader signal is about where vendor attention is heading: not at accelerating the agents themselves, but at the database systems beneath them, precisely as those agents start to multiply.
