Rwanda Remains the Stage for 2025 UCI Road World Championships Amid Regional Tensions

The UCI reaffirms Rwanda as the host for the 2025 Road World Championships despite unrest in neighboring DR Congo.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has confirmed that it will not shift the venue for the 2025 UCI Road World Championships away from Rwanda, as regional tensions continue in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). This monumental event is set to occur from September 21 to 28, 2025, marking a significant milestone as Rwanda will be the first African nation to host this prestigious championship.

Context and Current Situation

The backdrop for this event includes escalating conflict in nearby DR Congo, where the M23 rebel group has gained control over much of the eastern city of Goma, posing threats to further advancements into Congolese territory. Despite these developments, the UCI has stated its commitment to the sport and emphasized that Rwanda remains a secure environment for tourists and competitors alike. In a recent statement, the UCI remarked, "Rwanda is safe for tourism and business."

UCI's Assurance

In light of circulating rumors about a potential relocation of the championships, the UCI has clarified that as of now, no plans exist to move the event to Switzerland or any other country. "Sport, and cycling in particular, are powerful ambassadors for peace, friendship, and solidarity," the UCI highlighted, showcasing its belief in the unifying power of sports.

Upcoming Events: Tour du Rwanda

Prior to the World Championships, Rwanda will host the Tour du Rwanda, scheduled from February 23 to March 2, 2025. This race will serve as a precursor to the global championship and will also take competitors close to the tension-filled border with DR Congo. Despite the proximity of the conflict, race officials report that no teams have raised safety concerns. Kayishema Tity Thierry, head of communications for the Tour du Rwanda, stated, "The war is in DR Congo, not in Rwanda; why would we change our routes?" This reinforces the notion that the race's paths are strategically planned with safety in mind.

Looking Forward

With Rwanda stepping up as a host, cycling enthusiasts and their communities await what promises to be an exhilarating championship while hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflicts. The UCI continues to monitor the circumstances closely, committed to ensuring that athletes from all parts of the world can compete in a secure environment.
