Australia's Sarah Gigante claimed victory in the penultimate stage of the 2025 Women's Giro d'Italia, showcasing her climbing prowess on the challenging route from Fermignano to Monte Nerone. Gigante, riding for AG Insurance-Soudal Team, broke away from the peloton on the final climb, overtaking stage leader Elisa Longo Borghini with just three kilometers remaining. She powered through to finish 45 seconds ahead of Longo Borghini, who secured second place and the overall race lead.
Gigante's Strategy and Performance Gigante, 24, attributed her success to meticulous preparation and teamwork. "I had studied the final climb and decided to attack on the steep section," she said. "I wanted to prove that my stage four win wasn't a fluke and that I came to Italy to achieve great results." Her second stage win of the Giro propelled her to third place in the general classification, trailing Longo Borghini by 1 minute and 11 seconds.
Longo Borghini's Leadership Defending champion Elisa Longo Borghini, representing UAE Team ADQ, now leads the race by 22 seconds over Swiss rider Marlen Reusser. Reusser, who finished fourth in Stage 7, remains a strong contender as the competition heads into the final stage.
