Rhys Britton's Resilience: Overcoming Concussion to Shine in Cycling

British cyclist Rhys Britton shares his journey of recovery and personal growth after a year-long concussion battle, as he gears up for the European Track Cycling Championships.

A Year of Challenges and Growth

Great Britain cyclist Rhys Britton faced one of the toughest years of his career after a training crash in 2023 left him sidelined with a concussion. The 25-year-old Welshman missed out on the 2024 Paris Olympics but made a triumphant return to international racing at the World Championships in October. Now, he’s setting his sights on the European Track Cycling Championships in Belgium, ready to prove his resilience and determination.

The Journey Back

Britton described the past year as a "write-off," explaining how the recovery process was far from linear. "It took me about a year to get over the concussion and get back to the level I was beforehand," he told BBC Sport Wales. The mental challenges of dealing with a concussion, as opposed to a physical injury like a broken collarbone, were particularly taxing. "It's probably one of the hardest injuries I've had, just because there's not really a time frame on it," he said.

Despite the setbacks, Britton emerged stronger both on and off the bike. "I learned a lot from it. I grew a lot as a person," he reflected. The experience highlighted how quickly an athlete’s career can be disrupted, but it also reignited his passion for the sport. "I enjoy my cycling a lot more now," he added.

Looking Ahead

Britton’s return to form was evident at the 2024 World Championships, where he helped the British team secure a silver medal in the team pursuit. Now, he’s focused on making his mark at the European Championships. "It was hard, but it also gives me a lot of motivation to go for the next one and leave the disappointment behind," he said.

With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics already on his radar, Britton is determined to continue progressing. For now, his immediate goal is to perform at his best in Belgium and show the world that he’s back and stronger than ever.

Event Details

The European Track Cycling Championships will take place from Wednesday, February 12 to Sunday, February 16, 2025, in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.
