Seven Adobe apps, one developer, zero dollars: the Rust rebuild faces its test

TechRadar's hands-on asks whether a free, Rust-built clone of Creative Suite's biggest apps can stand in for a Photoshop subscription — and what that means for Adobe's paid model.

Seven applications. One developer. A price of zero. A solo programmer has rebuilt the biggest apps in Adobe's Creative Suite in the Rust programming language and is offering them for free — an undertaking unusual enough that TechRadar's reviewer went hands-on with the results.

The scope is what catches the eye. Creative Suite's flagship titles — the paid heart of Adobe's creative lineup — have been re-created by a single person working in Rust, a language better known for systems programming and memory safety than for consumer-grade creative tools. The engineering choice is unconventional, and so is the pitch: professional creative software of the kind people normally subscribe to, made available at no cost whatsoever.

TechRadar's test goes straight at the obvious question. The outlet's framing is blunt: is this, in effect, Photoshop without paying for it? The reviewer put the software through its paces to find out, treating the day-to-day experience of the clones against the originals as the yardstick. That comparison is the crux, because free reimplementations are judged on fidelity rather than philosophy.

The stakes sit with Adobe. A free clone of its biggest apps is, at minimum, evidence that the moat around professional creative software can be probed by one developer with a modern toolchain. Adobe's creative-software business rests on the premise that its tooling is hard to replicate; a publicly available Rust reimplementation, whatever its current polish, tests that premise in the open. The counterweight is just as real — replication on paper is not parity in practice, and the hands-on exists precisely to measure that gap.

For now, the project matters twice over: it proves the rebuild exists, and it forces a question — free in name, but usable in practice? — that the TechRadar test was written to settle.
