Robert MacIntyre Sets Sights on Major Victory After Historic Scottish Open Triumph

Robert MacIntyre shifts focus to winning a major after his landmark victory at the Scottish Open, aiming to build on his success in the upcoming PGA Tour events.

Robert MacIntyre, the 28-year-old Scottish golfer, has set his sights on winning a major championship following his historic victory at the Scottish Open. MacIntyre, who became the first Scot to win the title since Colin Montgomerie in 2009, will return to the Renaissance Club in July to defend his trophy.

A New Priority

MacIntyre's victory has shifted his focus. "My priority changes," he said. "When I pitched up at the Scottish Open, it was all about winning the Scottish Open. But now I feel like I've got that. So now I can look at the week later at the Open, taking nothing away from the Scottish Open, but I can almost prepare better for the Open because the monkey's off my back."

PGA Tour Success

MacIntyre is in his second full year on the PGA Tour and has shown significant improvement. Last May, he won the Canadian Open with his father, Dougie, acting as caddie. Reflecting on his journey, MacIntyre said, "I'm more comfortable. I've got a good team around me that drop in and out. Not so much welcomed but almost more accepted. I was a big believer when I first started, you earn the respect off of these top guys. I feel I've done that in the last eight months or so."

Ryder Cup Ambitions

MacIntyre was undefeated in the European Ryder Cup team that beat the Americans in Rome in 2023. However, he is not currently ranked sufficiently for an automatic spot for this year's event at Bethpage Black. "I'm not worried about it," MacIntyre added. "I've got so many big events. These elevated events, the majors. If I play good golf, I'll be there. If I don't, I don't deserve to be there."

Building for the Future

MacIntyre emphasized the importance of building a strong team for the Ryder Cup. "The Ryder Cup, you've got to have Rory [McIlroy] all singing and all dancing. The way he's playing golf just now is ideal for him. It's now about building that team below him and the staff around it. Let's go to Bethpage and hopefully win."

MacIntyre's journey from the Scottish Open to the PGA Tour and his aspirations for major championships highlight his dedication and growth in the sport of golf.
