Dundee FC's New Stadium Plan Faces Delays Due to Traffic Junction Dispute

Dundee FC's new stadium plans are delayed due to unresolved traffic junction issues with Transport Scotland, testing the patience of the club's management.

Traffic Junction Issue Delays Dundee Stadium Plan

Dundee FC's ambitious plan to build a new 12,500-seat multi-functional stadium in Camperdown has hit a significant roadblock. The primary issue revolves around the traffic junction design, which has yet to gain approval from Transport Scotland. This delay has pushed back the project, leaving the club to continue playing at Dens Park for at least another two years.

John Nelms, Dundee's managing director, expressed his frustration over the prolonged planning process. "We have one aspect that is still out there that needs to be heard before the city council can actually hear our proposal in full," Nelms stated. He emphasized that all other aspects of the project have been completed and agreed upon months ago.

The Core of the Issue

The dispute centers on the entry and exit points to the proposed stadium site. Transport Scotland has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the junction options presented by the developers. A spokesperson for Transport Scotland noted, "Neither of the trunk road junction options proposed in recent months has been shown to be effective, and the supporting traffic figures remain open to considerable uncertainty."

Despite these challenges, Nelms remains optimistic. He believes the issue is solvable and has called for a meeting with Transport Scotland to move the process forward. "I think we are in agreement that the actual junction works, and we are working on the finer details," Nelms said. "But I am not sure that we need to be working on the finer details just now."

Financial and Emotional Toll

The delays have not only tested the patience of the club's management but also incurred significant financial costs. Dundee has already spent nearly £3 million just to reach this stage of the planning process. Nelms, who has been with the club for over 12 years, admitted that his patience is not infinite. "It is very frustrating because we thought we would be built by now," he said.

Looking Ahead

Transport Scotland has reiterated its willingness to engage with the developer to resolve the issues. However, until a viable traffic junction proposal is submitted and approved, the project remains in limbo. Dundee FC and its fans are left hoping for a swift resolution to see their dream of a new stadium come to fruition.
