Revolutionizing Football: The Rise of Semi-Automated Offside Technology in the FA Cup

Explore how semi-automated offside technology is transforming the FA Cup, ensuring quicker and more accurate offside decisions with advanced AI and camera systems.

The FA Cup is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology during its fifth round this weekend, marking a significant advancement in football officiating. This technology, initially showcased at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has been successfully implemented in leagues like Serie A, La Liga, and the Champions League. Its primary aim is to enhance the accuracy and speed of offside decisions, reducing the subjective elements and delays associated with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

How Does Semi-Automated Offside Technology Work?

The system employs bespoke cameras installed in all 20 Premier League stadiums, which meticulously track the ball’s movement and monitor up to 10,000 surface mesh data points on the bodies of all 22 players. Using artificial intelligence, it automatically determines whether an attacking player was beyond the last defender when the ball was played. This eliminates the need for VAR officials to manually assess three critical elements:

  1. When the ball was kicked.
  2. The position and angle of the defender’s body at the exact moment the ball was played.
  3. The position and angle of the attacker’s body at that exact moment.

Once the AI system makes its decision, VAR officials review the data for accuracy before confirming the outcome. A 3D animation of the decision is then displayed on television broadcasts and stadium screens, providing transparency to fans.

Impact on the Game and Fans

With the integration of semi-automated offsides, decision-making times are expected to be significantly reduced, especially for tight offside calls. However, it’s important to note that some subjective elements remain, such as determining if an attacking player interfered with play or if a goalkeeper’s vision was obstructed. Additionally, the practice of allowing play to continue after narrow offside calls will persist, maintaining the flow of the game.

This technological leap not only enhances the accuracy of officiating but also enriches the viewing experience for fans, ensuring that the beautiful game remains fair and thrilling.
