Two Russian data centers have been struck by Ukrainian drones within the span of just two days, and the second hit has landed on some of the country's most significant compute capacity.
Russian state media has admitted that multiple modules at a Yandex data center in Kaluga were completely taken out of service by the strike. The campus is described as the largest data center in Russia, covering 1.4 million square feet, and the loss of entire modules rather than partial disruption points to a substantial reduction in capacity at the site.
The Kaluga attack followed a Ukrainian drone strike on a data center in Sasovo, Russia, making it the second facility targeted in two days.
Yandex, meanwhile, is reeling from another service outage. The phrasing matters: this is not the company's first disruption, and fresh outages stacked on top of offline modules deepen an already difficult operational picture for a provider running its services on its own data center estate.
The official acknowledgment itself carries weight. State media conceding that modules were "completely taken out" signals damage severe enough that it could not be framed as a routine interruption, and it amounts to a direct confirmation of hard capacity loss inside a facility of this scale.
For compute planners and investors watching the region, the sequence points to an uncomfortable shift: large data center campuses are being treated as direct targets, and two hits inside 48 hours suggest a pattern rather than chance. Conventional resiliency planning — redundancy, failover, geographic spread — was not built around drones reaching the facility itself.
Whether any portion of the 1.4 million square foot campus can be brought back online quickly, and what that means for Yandex's service reliability, is now the open question.
