Kyiv hit the infrastructure of 'Russia's Google' in response to Moscow's strikes on Kyiv's own data centers — and the outage exposes concentrated compute as a wartime vulnerability.
The bots went quiet almost overnight. Ukrainian drone strikes crippled multiple data centers operated by Yandex — the company long dubbed 'Russia's Google' — and Russian bot traffic collapsed dramatically, with the disinformation-linked traffic nearly eliminated.
The outage is a rare case study in how dependent large-scale automated traffic is on physical compute. Yandex anchors the search layer of the Russian internet, and when drones put several of its facilities out of action, the bot activity those sites carried did not degrade gracefully — it essentially vanished. For infrastructure watchers, the episode demonstrates that a handful of buildings can function as a single point of failure for an entire nation's automated web operations.
The campaign is explicitly retaliatory. Ukraine intensified its bombing of Yandex data centers in response to Moscow's strikes on data centers in Kyiv, a tit-for-tat exchange that has put compute facilities on both sides squarely in the line of fire.
For the AI-compute industry, the implications reach well beyond this conflict. The near-total overnight collapse shows that drone warfare has turned large data centers into strategically exposed assets, and that damage at the physical layer propagates instantly into the digital one. The crippling of multiple Yandex sites also illustrates the limits of redundancy when an adversary can keep hitting targets. Facility operators and capacity planners now have to weigh a threat model in which a data center is not neutral infrastructure but a military-relevant objective.
Tellingly, the collapse was achieved not with code but with drones against buildings. The war's most consequential strike on digital infrastructure so far has been a physical one.
