Too Close for Comfort: Starlink Conjunctions at Tens of Meters Prompt SpaceX Coordination Push

After encounters that closed to within tens or hundreds of meters, SpaceX argues that avoiding collisions in orbit can no longer be left to operators acting alone.

Tens of meters. That is how close SpaceX says its Starlink satellites have come to other objects in orbit — and after a string of near misses, the company is publicly calling for better coordination in space.

The encounters, SpaceX disclosed, produced conjunctions at ranges of tens to hundreds of meters. "These led to conjunctions of tens of meters to hundreds of meters. Way too close to comfort," the company said. What makes the statement notable is who is making it: not an outside critic warning about constellation risk, but SpaceX itself, describing how close its own spacecraft have come and concluding that the way orbit is managed needs to change.

The distances deserve unpacking. Objects in low Earth orbit approach one another at extreme closing velocities, which means a projected miss of tens of meters falls in the same range as the uncertainty inherent in the tracking predictions used to forecast it. Collision avoidance is a probabilistic exercise: operators maneuver against predicted conjunctions, not certainties, and when the forecast margin shrinks to double-digit meters, the gap between a clean pass and a debris-generating collision becomes uncomfortably thin. Hundreds of meters offers more breathing room — but evidently not enough to spare SpaceX's blunt assessment.

The company's remedy — better coordination — is broad by design. The implicit argument is that collision avoidance handled operator by operator leaves too much to chance when orbits converge, and that a more systematic approach to deconflicting traffic in orbit is needed. What such a regime would look like, and who would run it, remain open questions. What SpaceX's intervention establishes is that a major operator now regards existing arrangements as having produced misses it describes as far too close for comfort.

For the wider satellite ecosystem, the significance lies less in any single near miss than in the messenger. When an operator with this much hardware on orbit starts publicly quantifying how thin its margins have grown, the push for coordination ceases to be an abstract policy debate and becomes an operational demand from the party with the most to lose.
