The automaker's Halloween software update adds Ghostbusters flair to its electric lineup, with Bill Murray on hand in New York City as the custom Ecto-R1 showed its tricks.
Bill Murray needed a single word to pass judgment in New York City: 'perfect.' The actor's verdict on Rivian's custom Ecto-R1, shown off alongside a Halloween software update for the company's electric vehicles, made for one of the stranger crossovers between Hollywood IP and EV software this season.
The mechanics are straightforward. Rivian is rolling Ghostbusters into its electric vehicles through a themed software drop timed for Halloween. Alongside it, the company showed off a custom Ecto-R1, its take on the franchise's famous ghost-hunting machine, with Murray on hand in New York City. TechRadar's writer saw the vehicle in action and tried the new features firsthand.
For an industry that increasingly sells cars on software as much as metal, the stunt is a small but telling data point. Over-the-air updates have become the standard channel for performance upgrades and driver-assistance improvements; seasonal, entertainment-branded drops extend the same pipeline into pure engagement. The partner choice matters: Ghostbusters carries decades of recognition, and Murray's in-person turn with the Ecto-R1 delivered the kind of earned-media moment a conventional ad spend struggles to buy. It also shows how vehicle software teams are being asked to think like consumer app stores, shipping content that has nothing to do with driving.
The limits are just as clear: nothing here touches chips, data centers, or model benchmarks. It is consumer theater layered onto existing vehicle software — relevant to AI-compute readers mainly as another marker of how far software-defined vehicles now reach.
The formula, though, is repeatable: licensed franchise, custom build, celebrity verdict, software delivery. Endorsements fade. The channel does not.
