The award-winning illustrator warns that artists cannot afford to walk away from the contest with AI, framing human creativity as something worth actively defending.
A machine can now produce a competent illustration. What it cannot produce, in the view of award-winning illustrator Rob Biddulph, is a point of view — and that distinction sits at the center of his case against AI-generated art. The problem with the technology's creative output, he argues, is not quality. It is personality.
The framing is notable because it concedes ground that critics of the technology are often reluctant to give. If AI images were simply poor, the argument would settle itself, and audiences would drift back to human-made work on merit alone. Biddulph's position is more demanding. He treats technical proficiency as effectively a solved problem and relocates the contested territory to a different plane: the individual sensibility — the recognisable identity behind a picture — that he locates in human creativity and finds absent from machine output.
That belief is why he rejects disengagement as a strategy. "I don't think this is a fight that artists can afford to walk away from," he says. The phrasing is pointed: not a debate to observe from the sidelines, and not a trend to ride out, but a fight — one in which stepping away is itself a decision with consequences.
Read together, the two statements form a single argument. If what AI art lacks is personality rather than polish, then the defense of human creativity cannot rest on technical superiority, because that gap is, on his account, no longer the issue. It has to rest on the one thing a model cannot supply: a person, with a history and an outlook, standing behind the work. That is what Biddulph identifies as worth defending — and defending, in his telling, is an active undertaking rather than a default state.
Whether his peers act on that counsel is now the open question. His message to the creative community reduces to a wager: that the human signature in creative work carries durable value, but only for those willing to stay in the contest and assert it.
