Sony Wouldn't Do It, So a Modder Put PS2 Discs and 4K Upscaling on PS5

Developer Sword's PS5SX2 plays original PlayStation 2 discs natively on the console and upscales them to 4K — with the same homebrew dev confirming PS3 disc support comes next.

A feature Sony declined to build has been delivered anyway — not by the platform holder, but by a lone homebrew developer.

The developer, known as Sword, has released PS5SX2 for the PlayStation 5. The package enables something the machine cannot do out of the box: it plays original PlayStation 2 game discs natively, rather than routing them through any official Sony channel. On top of native disc playback, the tool upscales the output to 4K, pulling software built for an earlier console generation into range of modern high-resolution displays. The contrast with the platform holder's own choices is the core of the story — Tom's Hardware framed the release as delivering precisely the feature Sony declined to build.

Sword has also set expectations for what comes after: PS3 disc support is next in line for the PS5.

The original reporting is blunt about the dynamic at play. Native playback of PS2 discs, with upscaling to 4K, has landed on the console where Sony refused to provide it — a deliberate gap, and one a hobbyist has now filled without the platform holder's involvement. That inverts the usual order of things. The machine's own maker drew the line at what the hardware would do; the community crossed it, and in the process handed the PS5 a backward-compatibility story Sony never wrote for itself.

What stands on the record is compact but concrete. PS5SX2 exists, authored by Sword and released for the PlayStation 5. It plays PlayStation 2 discs natively and scales their output to 4K. PS3 disc support has been named as the project's next milestone — and per the available reporting, Sony plays no part in any of it.
