Four M.2 Slots, Dual 5GbE — One Ageing Intel Chip Holds Asustor Back

A sturdy two-bay build and premium I/O make the AS6702T v2 a capable edge storage box, but dated silicon and a high asking price blunt its appeal.

Four M.2 slots and a pair of 5GbE ports is a bold I/O loadout for a chassis with just two drive bays — and it is exactly where Asustor's Lockerstor 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2 manages to impress and disappoint at once.

TechRadar's verdict on the machine reads as a study in contrasts. The enclosure itself earns praise as sturdy, and the connectivity is generous by any compact-NAS standard: two 5GbE ports give the box genuine multi-gigabit networking headroom, while four M.2 slots let owners deploy fast SSD storage without sacrificing either of the two hard-drive bays. That is a serious amount of expansion capability packed into a two-bay footprint, and for buyers running cache-heavy or latency-sensitive workloads at the network edge, it is the part of the spec sheet that matters most.

The catch sits at the center of the board. The AS6702T v2 runs on an Intel processor the review describes as ageing, and that single component choice colors everything around it. Multi-gigabit networking and a bank of NVMe slots only pay off if the silicon behind them can move data fast enough; a dated chip risks leaving the box's most attractive features underused.

Price compounds the problem. The outlet flags the unit as expensive, and a premium sticker is a harder sell when the compute inside lags the I/O spec. Buyers weighing the AS6702T v2 are effectively asked to pay up front for capabilities the processor may not fully unlock.

The lesson for edge-storage buyers is narrow but clear: Asustor has the chassis and the port selection right, and the silicon and sticker are what let this otherwise well-built two-bay NAS down.
