Hands-on testing found the roaming perk remarkably simple to activate, repositioning a web browser as a travel connectivity giveaway rather than just a page renderer.
Three gigabytes of mobile data, handed out at no cost, from a web browser. That is the unusual proposition Opera has now attached to its Android app — a connectivity perk wrapped inside software most people open only to load pages.
The latest Android build of the Opera browser ships with native eSIM functionality, and the company is attaching 3GB of travel data at no charge so users have something to start with. The move turns the app into more than a window onto the web: it becomes a provisioning channel for connectivity itself, letting a traveler switch on mobile data without visiting a carrier shop or fumbling with a physical SIM tray.
The travel framing is the part worth attention. Roaming abroad has traditionally forced a choice among costly carrier packages, airport kiosk SIM cards, or a separate eSIM app download. By embedding eSIM support directly into a browser already sitting on an Android home screen, Opera collapses that errand into software the user opens every day. The 3GB grant works as a zero-cost on-ramp — enough data to get started the moment a flight lands, before any spending decision has to be made.
Ease of setup was the standout in hands-on testing. The TechRadar reviewer who tried the feature found the roaming perk could hardly be simpler to activate — a notable claim in a market where eSIM onboarding often involves scanning codes and waiting on provisioning.
For now the giveaway is confined to Android; no other platform is covered in the report, and no terms are detailed for what happens once the free 3GB is used up. But as an acquisition hook, free travel data is a tangibly different kind of browser perk — one measured in gigabytes abroad rather than milliseconds on a benchmark, and one a traveler can feel the moment they land.
