Rise of Huwipulotu: Scotland's Dynamic Duo in Lions' Midfield
Explore the rise of Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu, Scotland's formidable midfield duo, as they take center stage in the Lions Tour.

The Emergence of Huwipulotu
The first time Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu played together in a midfield was in December 2022 for Glasgow Warriors against Perpignan. Jones scored, and Glasgow won. Their first international match as a center partnership was in February 2023 against England, where Jones again scored, leading Scotland to victory. Their first start as a 12-13 combination for the British and Irish Lions was earlier this month against the Waratahs, where Jones scored twice, securing another win for the Lions.
A Test of Their Mettle
Now, Huwipulotu is set to take on a Lions Test. This opportunity arose after Garry Ringrose suffered a concussion, which also affected Bundee Aki's chances of starting. Their telepathic understanding, honed through club and country games, has made them formidable opponents. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has witnessed their journey firsthand.
Jones: The Comeback King
Huw Jones, 31, made a significant impact in Scottish rugby with his power, pace, and incredible running lines. He scored ten tries in his first 14 Tests, including three against Australia and four against England. However, his career faced a downturn, and he missed the 2019 World Cup. His comeback began with a season at Harlequins, where he rebuilt his game.
"When he first came through, he would just wriggle out of tackles," says Townsend. "He knew exactly what he needed to do either to get into space or to force that defender to defend him, which opened up the space for someone else."
Tuipulotu: From Anger to Leadership
Sione Tuipulotu's journey began in Melbourne. The son of an Australian and a Tongan, he was an angry child who found solace in rugby. His mentor at school, Mr. Windle, changed his outlook, and he eventually moved to Glasgow, which transformed his life.
"When he was in Japan, he was mainly playing on the wing," says Townsend. "He was powerful, dynamic, creative. If you've got someone, like Sione, who's carrying hard, but also can put a short pass in or a ball out the back, that's dangerous."
The Historic Scottish Trio
Finn Russell completes the historic Scottish 10-12-13 trio in the Lions Test. Russell has been one of the standout players of the tour, bringing control, class, and leadership. The trio has an exceptional record against Australia, and their communication on the field is impressive.
"The communication between Sione and Finn is impressive. Sione shares the load in terms of what we should be doing on the edge attack," adds Townsend. "If you've got someone of Sione's calibre saying, 'This is the play' then Finn will trust that and it'll allow him to be more instinctive."
The Ultimate Challenge
As they prepare for the Lions Test, the trio faces their toughest challenge yet. Their journey from Scotland to the Lions Tour is a testament to their hard work and determination. The rugby world watches as they aim to leave their mark on the biggest stage.
