William Buick Achieves 2,000 Wins and Sets Sights on 3,000: A Jockey's Journey to Greatness
William Buick celebrates his 2,000th British win and aims for 3,000, highlighting his dedication and the golden era of jockeys.

William Buick, the celebrated jockey, has reached a remarkable milestone with his 2,000th British win, and he’s already setting his sights on the next 1,000. At 36 years old, Buick achieved this feat aboard El Cordobes, trained by Charlie Appleby, in the prestigious Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket. Buick surged ahead in the closing stages to secure a two-length victory over Wimbledon Hawkeye, while the odds-on favorite, Ghostwriter, was withdrawn after an incident in the pre-parade ring.
Buick, who was crowned champion jockey in 2022 and 2023, expressed his gratitude and ambition in an interview with BBC Sport: "It's a great milestone, and we're looking for the next thousand now. It's a big achievement. It's longevity, hard work, and dedication that gets you to those numbers. Probably the most important thing is the support from trainers, owners, my family, and the horses themselves. Without them, none of these things can happen."
Shortly after his landmark victory, Buick added two more wins to his tally. Crimson Rose delivered an impressive performance in the six-furlong fillies' maiden, and Opera Ballo triumphed in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes.
Buick, born in Norway but based in Newmarket as part of Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team, is the sixth active jockey to reach 2,000 British wins. However, none have yet achieved the elusive 3,000 mark. Turning professional in 2006, Buick remains determined to continue competing at the highest level for another decade.
"You want to keep going. I'm in and around my prime in my career, at the age of 36, soon to be 37," said Buick, who recently won the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas with Ruling Court and Desert Flower respectively. "Touch wood, I've got many more good years left in the saddle, and I want to really make it count. We've had Ryan [Moore] and Frankie [Dettori] and plenty of other names in the weighing room - we are in a golden period of jockeys at the moment. So we need to embrace it, keep going, and keep making it special."
Buick’s journey is a testament to his resilience, skill, and the unwavering support of his team. As he continues to chase history, the horse racing world eagerly watches to see if he can achieve the next monumental milestone.
