Wimbledon 2025: Sonay Kartal Shines While Katie Boulter Struggles to Find Her Moment

Sonay Kartal continues her impressive run at Wimbledon 2025, while Katie Boulter faces disappointment in her quest for a breakthrough moment.

Wimbledon 2025: Sonay Kartal's Rise and Katie Boulter's Setback

Sonay Kartal's Impressive Performance

Sonay Kartal has been one of the standout players at Wimbledon 2025, showcasing her talent and determination on the grass courts. The 23-year-old British player has made significant strides in the past year, climbing around 250 places in the rankings to reach the 51st spot. Her journey at this year's Wimbledon has been nothing short of remarkable.

Kartal started her campaign with a stunning victory over 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round, marking her third win against a top-20 opponent this year. She followed this up with a dominant performance against Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova, winning 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the third round.

Kartal's unique style, characterized by her tattoos and retro tennis kit, has made her a recognizable presence on the court. Her path to professional tennis has been unconventional, as she had to largely self-fund her career. This experience has helped her mature quickly and develop a strong sense of accountability.

"When I was growing up, I kind of did quite a lot of tournaments on my own just because I couldn't afford to pay a coach week in and week out," Kartal said. "I think it was great. It helped me develop as a teenager, grow up super fast, made me much more mature, hold myself accountable to a lot of things."

Next up for Kartal is a match against French qualifier Diane Parry, who defeated 12th seed Diana Shnaider to reach the third round. Kartal is determined to continue her good form and make it to the fourth round for the first time.

"I think having a home Slam, I think that's one arena I really want to perform well in front of the people that mean the most to me, friends and family and everyone," Kartal added. "Also, it's a surface that doesn't really come naturally to me. I have to really think and adapt my game style, which I think is also going to help me develop beyond this tournament as well."

Katie Boulter's Disappointing Exit

While Kartal thrives, fellow Briton Katie Boulter faces another disappointing exit at Wimbledon. Boulter started her campaign with a dream win over ninth seed Paula Badosa in the opening round, but her journey came to an abrupt end in the second round with a three-set defeat to lucky loser Solana Sierra.

Boulter had a promising start, fighting back from 5-2 down to take the first set. However, she made too many mistakes in the next two sets, allowing Sierra to secure a 6-7 (9-7), 6-2, 6-1 victory.

"Of course it hurts, it's a really tough pill to swallow - it always is here," Boulter said. "Unfortunately, it's just the way that it is. Sometimes I just have to accept that my moment might not come."

This marks the second consecutive year that Boulter has failed to reach the third round at Wimbledon. Her exit was particularly disappointing given her strong performance against Badosa, where she relished the underdog status but struggled as the favorite against Sierra.

"You can look at a piece of paper and be like, 'oh, this is a terrible loss'," Boulter added. "Ultimately, she played better than me on the day. That's how it is."

Looking Ahead

As Wimbledon 2025 progresses, all eyes will be on Sonay Kartal as she continues her quest for glory. Her rise in the tennis world is a testament to her hard work and resilience. Meanwhile, Katie Boulter will need to regroup and find a way to overcome the mental and physical challenges that have hindered her progress at the All England Club.
