Southern Hemisphere Duo to Lead Lions' Charge Against Argentina

Joe Schmidt highlights the Southern Hemisphere influence in the Lions' midfield as Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu prepare to face Argentina.

Southern Hemisphere Duo to Lead Lions' Charge Against Argentina

Australia head coach Joe Schmidt has emphasized the Southern Hemisphere roots of the British and Irish Lions' midfield pairing, Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu, as they gear up for their clash with Argentina. The Lions are set to play their only pre-tour match at the Aviva Stadium this Friday before embarking on a nine-game tour of Australia.

Aki and Tuipulotu: A Formidable Partnership

Both Aki, born in New Zealand, and Tuipulotu, from Australia, typically play as inside centres but will be paired together in the midfield against Argentina. Schmidt, who gave Aki his Ireland debut in 2017 after he qualified on residency, spoke highly of both players. "A southern hemisphere centre partnership that will be pretty formidable," Schmidt remarked during a media conference.

Schmidt's Insights on the Players

Schmidt, who has a deep understanding of Aki's capabilities from their time together in Ireland, praised Aki's contributions to the team environment. "I coached Bundee for several years and know him really well and respect him massively as a player. He's a great contributor to the team environment," Schmidt said. Although his interactions with Tuipulotu have been limited, Schmidt acknowledged the Scottish captain's professionalism and leadership qualities.

Earning the Lions Jersey

The selection of eight overseas-born players in Andy Farrell's 38-man squad has sparked discussions about their commitment. Lions assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth addressed these concerns, asserting that every player has earned their place. "Everyone has earned the right to pull on the Lions jersey," Wigglesworth stated. "They are, to a man, incredibly proud to be here. It is not your background or how you have got here, it's what sort of player you are and what sort of man you are. We have got great men and great players."

Looking Ahead

As the Lions prepare for their upcoming tour, the focus remains on the strength and unity of the squad. The combination of Aki and Tuipulotu in the midfield is expected to be a key factor in their success, showcasing the global nature of modern rugby and the diverse backgrounds that contribute to the sport's richness.
