Hannah Klugman's Valiant Effort Falls Short in French Open Juniors Final

Hannah Klugman, 16, narrowly missed becoming the first British junior in nearly 50 years to win the French Open, losing to Lilli Tagger in the final.

Klugman's Historic Run Ends in Final Defeat

Teenager Hannah Klugman's remarkable journey at the 2025 French Open Juniors came to an end as she fell to Austria's Lilli Tagger in the girls' singles final. The 16-year-old Brit, ranked 13th in the world junior rankings, was aiming to become the first British junior since Michelle Tyler in 1976 to claim the title. Despite her valiant efforts, Klugman was defeated 6-2, 6-0 in a match that showcased Tagger's superior clay-court prowess.

A Week of Triumphs and Trials

Klugman's path to the final was marked by resilience and determination. She overcame tough opponents in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals, battling back from a set down to secure her place in the final. Her performance in Paris highlighted her potential, especially considering her limited experience on clay prior to this tournament. Earlier this year, Klugman spent two months training on clay, including a stint at Rafael Nadal's academy in Spain, which significantly boosted her confidence and skills.

Tagger's Dominance on Display

Lilli Tagger, 17, played a near-flawless match, utilizing her elegant one-handed backhand to dominate the baseline exchanges. Klugman had opportunities in the first set, holding break points in the first and seventh games, but a crucial service break in the fourth game shifted the momentum in Tagger's favor. In the second set, Tagger capitalized on her first break opportunity, and Klugman's confidence began to wane. A double fault on break point saw Klugman fall 4-0 behind, and she managed to win only five more points as Tagger closed out the match.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, Klugman's performance in Paris has cemented her status as one of the most promising young talents in tennis. Her victory at the prestigious Orange Bowl junior championships in 2023 and her appearances in two Grand Slam girls' doubles finals further underscore her potential. As she continues to develop her game, the tennis world will be watching closely to see how she builds on this experience.
