Former Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw has expressed confidence that Finn Russell and Johnny Sexton, despite their contrasting personalities and past criticisms, can work together harmoniously on the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia. Laidlaw, who played alongside both players during the 2017 Lions tour, highlighted their unique strengths and the potential for synergy in the squad.

Sexton's Role and Past Criticisms Johnny Sexton, recently appointed to Andy Farrell's backroom team, has previously been critical of Russell. In his autobiography, Sexton suggested that Russell's media popularity influenced Warren Gatland's decision to select him for the 2021 Lions tour to South Africa. In a recent interview, Sexton described Russell as "flashy" and indicated a preference for Owen Farrell over him.

Laidlaw's Perspective Laidlaw, however, remains optimistic about their collaboration. "Finn's definitely going to be on that tour, I would believe," Laidlaw told BBC Scotland. "He's been excellent, went on the last tour, played really well in the third Test. He's a quality player, he's been in excellent form for Bath as well, flying high in the Premiership."

Coaching Dynamics With Sexton now part of the coaching staff alongside Richard Wigglesworth, Laidlaw anticipates that Owen Farrell might also be included in the squad. "I could probably see that happening," Laidlaw said. "If that happens, I still see Finn going as well, probably those two plus Sam Prendergast as well. So I can't see why he's not going to be in the squad."

Personality Contrasts Laidlaw acknowledged the stark differences in their personalities. "Sexton was the ultimate competitor," he said. "I had the privilege of sharing some time with him on that trip and I certainly learned a bit off him. He's just a different person to Finn. He's obviously more serious. He's just completely different."

Looking Ahead Despite these differences, Laidlaw believes that their shared goal of Lions success will help them set aside any past grievances. "Hopefully now that he's obviously not playing, some of that stuff will waver away and surely they can put the differences to one side and hopefully get on with each other," he concluded.
