Manchester United's Participation in Inaugural Women's World Sevens Tournament

Manchester United among 8 clubs in new Women's World Sevens. Details on format, players, and more.

Manchester United's Involvement in the Women's World Sevens

Manchester United is set to be one of the eight clubs competing in the inaugural Women's World Sevens tournament in May. This new seven-a-side competition kicks off three days before the Women's Champions League final and offers a prize money pool of $5m dollars (£3.76m).

United will join European clubs like Ajax, Benfica, and Bayern Munich in Estoril, Portugal, from 21-23 May. The other four participating clubs are yet to be named.

The tournament has attracted investment, and all clubs' flights and accommodation will be covered. The format involves matches on a grass pitch half the size of a typical 11-a-side pitch, with 15-minute halves and unlimited substitutions. Clubs can bring squads of up to 25 players, but only 14 can participate.

The question of how many players due to compete at Euro 2025 will take part remains. Matches are planned to be broadcast on DAZN and potentially on club websites or streaming platforms.

Player welfare has been considered, and the tournament aims to drive investment in women's football and have a social impact.
