Running in Memory: Southport Dads Honor Daughters at London Marathon

Two fathers from Southport, David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar, are set to run the London Marathon in memory of their daughters, Alice Aguiar, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Bebe King, who tragically lost their lives during a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop last July. The fathers are raising funds for projects established in their daughters' memories, aiming to create lasting legacies that will benefit the community.

Emotional Journey

David Stancombe shared with BBC Breakfast how he feels his daughter Elsie's presence during his runs. "I tell her to keep going with me, that we're going to do this together, you're going to be with me - always," he said. Sergio Aguiar also feels Alice's spirit with him, especially during solitary runs. "She's always with us. And she's going to be there helping daddy," he expressed.

Community Projects

The funds raised by the dads will support various community projects. David is raising money for Elsie's Story, a charitable trust that assists young people in the Southport area. Sergio is focused on building a new playground at Churchtown Primary School, where Alice was a pupil. The playground will include a performance stage and a library, dedicated to Alice and Bebe.

Support from Families

The families of the victims are rallying behind the dads. Lauren and Ben King, parents of Bebe, will be at the marathon to support David and Sergio. "It is just incredible what they are both doing," said Mrs. King. "And we want to be a part of it every step of the way."

Marathon Day

On the day of the marathon, around 40 friends and family members will be in London to cheer on David and Sergio, all wearing hoodies and t-shirts featuring the Elsie's Story logo. Mrs. Stancombe is confident her husband will complete the marathon, having witnessed his resilience and determination during training. "I have absolutely no doubt, but I know it will be Elsie who'll be the one to carry him over that finish line," she said.

Conclusion

The London Marathon is not just a race for these fathers; it's a journey of remembrance and hope. Their efforts are a testament to the enduring love for their daughters and their commitment to creating positive change in their community. The marathon will be a poignant moment for all involved, as they honor the lives of Alice, Elsie, and Bebe.
