Tom Banton's Historic 344* Leads Somerset to Dominance in County Championship

Tom Banton scores an unbeaten 344, setting a new record for Somerset in the County Championship against Worcestershire.

Tom Banton's Record-Breaking Innings

Tom Banton etched his name into Somerset's cricketing history with an unbeaten 344, the highest first-class score for the county, surpassing Justin Langer's 342 against Surrey in 2006. This monumental innings came on the second day of the County Championship First Division match against Worcestershire at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.

Banton's Masterclass

Banton, aged 26, faced 381 balls, hitting 53 fours and a six, and batted for just over eight hours. His innings not only marked his fourth first-class century but also established him as the eighth Somerset player to score a triple century, the first since James Hildreth in 2009. The right-hander's performance was pivotal in Somerset amassing a massive 637-6, leading Worcestershire by 468 runs.

Record Partnerships

Banton and James Rew formed a colossal fifth-wicket partnership of 371 runs in 86.3 overs, the highest in Somerset's history, surpassing the previous record of 320 by John Francis and Ian Blackwell in 2005. Rew contributed a solid 152 from 275 balls, including 14 fours and two sixes.

Worcestershire's Struggle

Worcestershire had a day to forget, toiling in the sun with little success. Despite deploying seven different bowlers, they struggled to contain Somerset's onslaught. Ben Allison was the only bowler to cause some discomfort, but a dropped catch by Tom Hinley off Rew's bat summed up their day.

The Final Flourish

In a dramatic finale, Banton broke the record by pulling Kashif Ali to the mid-wicket boundary off the penultimate ball of the day. This moment not only sealed his place in history but also ensured Somerset's dominance in the match.

Looking Ahead

With two days remaining, Worcestershire face a Herculean task to save the game. Somerset, on the other hand, will look to capitalize on their substantial lead and push for a comprehensive victory.
