Celtic Boys Club Abuse Settlement: A Milestone in Scottish Football History
Over 20 legal claims of historical abuse at Celtic Boys Club have been settled, marking a significant moment in Scottish football history.

More than 20 legal claims of historical abuse at Celtic Boys Club have been settled for a seven-figure sum, according to lawyers. Approximately 30 former players initiated a class action against Celtic Plc for damages, with 70% of these cases now resolved. Further settlements are anticipated in the coming weeks.
Thompsons Solicitors, representing the plaintiffs, stated that Celtic has not formally admitted liability or issued an apology. Several former coaches and officials at the boys club have been convicted of sexual offences against teenage players over several decades.
In 2023, a judge approved a class action group litigation against Celtic for alleged abuses at Celtic Boys Club. Laura Connor from Thompsons Solicitors emphasized that the litigation was prolonged by the defendant, but the plaintiffs maintained their dignity throughout the process.
She remarked, "At long last they have achieved success and can take this compensation as confirmation that Celtic Boys Club was indeed inextricably linked to Celtic Football Club." The victims expressed relief as settlements were agreed upon in 22 of the 28 cases involved in the group proceedings.
Eight cases remain outstanding, including those involving former coach Jim McCafferty, who died in prison in 2022. Celtic has yet to comment on the settlement. The legal case has centered on whether Celtic the company was a separate entity from the boys club, a position heavily criticized given the compelling evidence of their connection.
Lawyers for the former players argued that the boys club and Celtic were "intimately connected," and the senior club was "vicariously liable" for the assaults. This argument now seems settled, bringing some closure to one of the darkest episodes in Scottish football history.
