Rob Hunter Vows Radical Overhaul to Revive Exeter Chiefs' Premiership Fortunes

Exeter's new head coach Rob Hunter pledges sweeping reforms to reverse the Chiefs' worst Premiership campaign since 2010 following their high-scoring loss to Bristol.

Hunter's Immediate Priorities for Exeter's Turnaround

Newly-appointed Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Hunter has declared his willingness to overhaul all aspects of the team's performance following their disappointing 52-38 defeat to Bristol Bears. This loss leaves Exeter second-bottom in the Premiership with just two wins from twelve matches - their worst showing since promotion in 2010.

"Every component of our game is under review," Hunter stated to BBC Radio Devon. "From attacking patterns to defensive structures, set-pieces to transition play - nothing is sacred. We have urgent short-term fixes and longer-term improvements to implement."

Rebuilding After Financial Challenges

Hunter acknowledged the remarkable efforts of outgoing coach Ali Hepher, director of rugby Rob Baxter, and CEO Tony Rowe in navigating the club through COVID-19's financial impacts. While rivals like Wasps and Worcester folded, Exeter maintained solvency through difficult decisions.

"The leadership steered us through absolute hardship," Hunter remarked. "Their sacrifice means we now have a stable platform to rebuild. Our recruitment is improving, investment increasing, and we're moving back toward the salary cap."

Youth Development Strategy

With many international stars departing in 2023, Exeter has fielded one of the Premiership's youngest squads. Last season's seventh-place finish (10 wins/16 games) showed promise, but 2024's struggles highlight growing pains.

"Our academy graduates need time," Hunter noted. "The Premiership Cup final defeat hurt, but these experiences will pay dividends. We're committed to developing homegrown talent while competing at the highest level."

Tactical Evolution Ahead

Hunter's coaching pedigree includes:

  • England U20s head coach
  • 12 years as Exeter forwards coach
  • Specializes in set-piece innovation

Fans can expect:

  1. Revamped defensive systems
  2. More varied attacking patterns
  3. Improved kicking strategy
  4. Enhanced transitional play

"The players' commitment is unquestionable," Hunter emphasized. "Now we must give them the tactical tools to succeed."
