Seven-a-side football

The Global Women's Seven-A-Side Football Series is set to commence in May, introducing a revolutionary format that promises to elevate the women's game. This series will feature matches played on a half-sized pitch, with two 15-minute halves, ensuring fast-paced and thrilling encounters. The first event is scheduled for 21-23 May in Estoril, Portugal, and will be broadcast live on the popular streaming platform DAZN.

Innovative Format

  • Field Size: Half the size of a standard football pitch.
  • Match Duration: Two 15-minute halves with potential extra time for tie-breakers.
  • Team Structure: Seven players per side, emphasizing speed and agility.

Leading the Charge

The series is backed by Jennifer Mackesy, a prominent US-based philanthropist and co-owner of NWSL club Gotham FC. Mackesy emphasized that World Sevens Football (W7F) is designed to showcase talent, grow personal brands, and provide economic opportunities for players.

Player Advisory Council

Former United States winger Tobin Heath and ex-England defender Anita Asante are leading the player advisory council, ensuring that players remain at the heart of the game. Asante highlighted that this competition offers a new stage for players to shine, describing it as football made for the future.

Future Events

Organizers are planning future tournaments across the United States, Mexico, Asia, and Europe, with a $5 million prize pool per event. This initiative aims to bring together leading clubs and elite talent, providing a unique platform for women in football.
