London Marathon 2025: A Historic Event Set to Break World Records

The 2025 London Marathon is poised to become the largest marathon in history, with over 56,000 runners expected to participate and break previous records.

The 2025 London Marathon is gearing up to make history as the world's largest marathon ever staged. With more than 56,000 runners expected to complete the 26.2-mile course on April 27, 2025, the event is set to surpass the current record of 55,646 finishers set by the New York Marathon in November 2024.

Since its inception in 1981, the London Marathon has seen over 1.3 million runners cross the finish line. This year, the event received a staggering 840,000 applications, breaking the previous world record of 578,304 set in 2024. Notably, 49% of UK applicants were female, and there was a 105% increase in applications from individuals aged 20-29.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, expressed his excitement: "The 45th edition is a landmark year for us, and it would be wonderful to mark that by becoming the biggest marathon ever staged anywhere in the world. Marathon Day is an extraordinary day when communities come together to celebrate the very best of humanity as tens of thousands of participants take on the legendary 26.2-mile challenge from Greenwich to The Mall and raise tens of millions for charity on the way."

This year's event will also feature some of the world's top athletes. Eliud Kipchoge, the distance-running legend, is returning to the London Marathon for the first time since 2020. The women's race will see Ruth Chepngetich, the women's world record holder, Sifan Hassan, the Olympic champion, and Tigst Assefa, the silver medallist, competing. Eilish McColgan will make her debut in this prestigious event.

In the men's race, Emile Cairess will lead the British contingent, with his sights set on Mo Farah's British record. He will be joined by Alex Yee, the Olympic and world triathlon champion.

The 2025 London Marathon is not just a race; it's a celebration of human spirit, endurance, and community. With record-breaking participation and world-class athletes, this event is set to be a historic milestone in the world of athletics.
