Premiership Rugby Introduces Away Ends to Enhance Matchday Atmosphere

Premiership Rugby is trialling designated away ends at select matches to boost fan engagement and matchday atmosphere.

Premiership Rugby is set to trial designated away ends at two high-profile matches next month, aiming to enhance the matchday atmosphere and increase attendances. The initiative will be implemented during the April fixtures between Saracens and Gloucester at the Stone X Stadium and Leicester Tigers and Harlequins at Welford Road.

Unlike the strict segregation seen in football, this trial will allow away fans the option to sit together in a specific block while still mingling with home supporters. A Premiership Rugby spokesperson emphasized, "Away fans can and will sit among the main crowd; this is simply about giving people a choice. The initiative is not meant to be adversarial but rather to foster a spirited and inclusive environment."

The league has consulted players who thrive on the energy of vibrant away support. It is anticipated that a few hundred fans will participate in the initial trial. "It’ll be enough fans to make a noise," the spokesperson added. "Players have expressed how they feed off this energy, and it also encourages home fans to engage more, creating a dynamic back-and-forth atmosphere."

This trial comes as Premiership Rugby continues its recovery from a challenging period, with stadium occupancy rising to 81% this season, a 7% increase since 2023. The league hopes this initiative will further boost fan engagement and solidify rugby’s reputation for its welcoming and inclusive culture.

Rugby union has long been celebrated for its tradition of unsegregated crowds, where fans of opposing teams can enjoy the game side by side. This trial aims to preserve that spirit while offering a new way for supporters to experience the thrill of live rugby.
