Craig Gordon Urges Steve Clarke to Continue Leading Scotland Beyond World Cup

Craig Gordon expresses his hope for Steve Clarke to remain as Scotland's head coach beyond the World Cup, praising his transformative impact on the national team.

Heart of Midlothian goalkeeper Craig Gordon has voiced his strong support for Steve Clarke to continue as the head coach of the Scotland national football team beyond the upcoming World Cup. Clarke, who has hinted at stepping down after the tournament, has been instrumental in Scotland's recent successes, including qualification for two European Championships.

Gordon, who is set to earn his 80th cap in the upcoming Nations League play-off against Greece, lauded Clarke's impact on the team. "I think he's done fantastically well for Scotland. When he came in, we weren't qualifying for tournaments. We've now qualified for two Euros," Gordon said. "We've gone close for a World Cup as well. It's been a great time to be part of the squad. It's been enjoyable to be in that environment."

The 42-year-old goalkeeper highlighted the professionalism and transformative changes Clarke has brought to the team. "The professionalism and the amount he's changed throughout that time to get us to where we are now. He's done a fantastic job," Gordon added. "I wouldn't be telling him to stop there. He'll make his own mind up. As I say, it's a great dressing room to be part of. He's created that and hopefully it will continue for a long time yet."

Scotland is set to face Greece in a Nations League double-header, with the winner securing a place in League A for the next edition of the tournament, which begins in September 2026. Additionally, both teams have been drawn in the same group for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, setting the stage for more intense encounters.

Gordon acknowledged the challenge posed by Greece, describing them as a strong defensive team. "We're going to get used to playing against them. They're a good team," he said. "Recent results will show that. Defensively, very sound. It's going to be a difficult game for us. We need to play really well to try and get through."

As Scotland prepares for these crucial matches, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum built under Clarke's leadership, with Gordon and the rest of the squad eager to continue their journey on the international stage.
