In a heartfelt tribute to the late Michael O'Sullivan, the prestigious Cheltenham Festival has announced the renaming of its opening race to the Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novices' Hurdle. This decision comes in memory of the Irish jockey who tragically passed away on 16 February 2025, following a fall at Thurles Racecourse.

O'Sullivan, aged 24, had a remarkable career that saw him rise to prominence after his victory aboard Marine Nationale in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle in 2023. His subsequent win in the Fred Winter Hurdle on Jazzy Matty further cemented his status as a leading jockey, making him a beloved figure in the racing community.

The O'Sullivan family expressed their gratitude for the honor, stating, "We are deeply proud of Michael's incredible talent and the legacy he left in the world of racing. Renaming the race that marked the pinnacle of his career is a fitting tribute to his skill, dedication, and passion for the sport."

Michael’s journey began in 2018 with his first win under rules at Cork, and he turned professional in September 2022. By 2023, he had become the Irish champion conditional jockey, amassing 95 wins across Ireland and Britain.

The Cheltenham chief executive, Guy Lavender, shared, "Given that it was at Cheltenham that Michael enjoyed his biggest success as a rider back on that magical Tuesday afternoon in 2023, we felt it was only right to pay tribute to Michael in this way."

As the racing community continues to mourn the loss of this rising star, the renaming of the Supreme Novices' Hurdle stands as a testament to Michael O'Sullivan's enduring impact on the sport.
