Erik Ten Hag on Modern Football: The Challenge of Coaching Today’s Players

Former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has opened up about the difficulties modern football players face when dealing with criticism. Ten Hag, who was sacked by United in October 2022, believes that today’s players are more sensitive compared to those from his generation.

The Generational Divide

Speaking to SEG Stories, Ten Hag explained: "This generation usually finds it difficult to deal with criticism. Criticism really gets to them. The generation that I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct." He added that being direct with his current group of players would demotivate them, whereas it was an acceptable approach in the past.

Challenges at Manchester United

During his tenure at Manchester United, Ten Hag faced several challenges, including disputes with high-profile players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. Ronaldo’s contract was terminated after he publicly criticized Ten Hag, while Sancho was banished from the first team following a disagreement over his performance in training.

Despite these challenges, Ten Hag managed to secure the FA Cup and League Cup during his two full seasons at Old Trafford. However, United’s eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season marked their worst performance in the competition’s history.

Praised for Youth Development

Ten Hag was also praised for his role in developing younger players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. He emphasized the need to show more care and use a different approach with modern players. "With this generation, you choose different words and a different approach," he said. He compared his experience with Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, where a more direct communication style was effective.

Looking Ahead

Ten Hag has stated that he will not take on a new job until the next season. He expressed gratitude towards Manchester United fans for their unwavering support during his time at the club. "What makes the Manchester United fans so special is that they stand by the team even in the face of setbacks," he said.

As the football world continues to evolve, Ten Hag’s insights shed light on the changing dynamics between coaches and players in the modern game.
