Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward expressed deep disappointment over her team's performance in the first half of their 4-0 defeat to Slovenia in the Nations League. Ward, who had previously secured a 1-0 victory against Turkey in her debut match, faced a harsh reality as Slovenia dominated the game in Koper.

Slovenia established a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime and added a fourth goal late in the match, showcasing a clinical and efficient performance. Ward did not mince words when analyzing the first half: "The first half was horrible - that's on me. I've tried something different, I've tried to get us in positions to create more, and it's not paid off," she told RTE Sport. She emphasized the need for accountability and improvement, stating, "We have to own it, we have to take responsibility, we have to look at it, we have to make sure that that half of football never happens again because it's completely unacceptable."

Despite a more competitive second half, the damage had already been done. Ward acknowledged that "At half-time we had to readjust and in the second half I thought we were much, much better but you can't have a half of football like that and expect to win the game." This loss leaves Republic of Ireland in second place in League B Group 2, trailing Slovenia by three points.

Ward, however, remains steadfast in her footballing philosophy, which she believes has served her well in her previous roles. "I think you could see across both games what we're trying to do," she said. "My philosophy has been the same, and it's served me well at all three clubs [Sheffield United, Birmingham and Aston Villa] with very little resources." She also highlighted the challenges of adapting to a new era for the team, especially after losing key leaders. "It's about adapting. It's a new era for this group. There are some leaders that have gone too. When you lose leaders that takes its toll on other players as well."

The defeat underscores the growing pains of a team in transition, but Ward's commitment to her vision suggests a long-term approach to building a competitive Republic of Ireland squad.
