Ellis Mee: From Semi-Pro to Wales Star in Five Months - A Rugby Prodigy's Journey

Discover how Ellis Mee rose from semi-professional rugby to making his Wales debut in just five months, showcasing his rapid development and impact on the field.

Ellis Mee: A Meteoric Rise in Rugby

Ellis Mee's journey from semi-professional rugby to making his Wales debut in just five months is nothing short of remarkable. The 21-year-old wing has quickly become a standout player, making his first Test start after only 10 professional games.

Early Beginnings and Rapid Development

Mee was born in Nottingham and spent part of his childhood in Adelaide before returning to England in 2012. He grew up playing for local clubs Keyworth and West Brideford before moving on to Nottingham Trent University and the Nottingham club side. Despite not being involved in representative sides or academies, Mee's raw talent and unique journey have shaped him into a formidable player.

The Scarlets Influence

Moving to Scarlets has been pivotal in Mee's development. The coaching staff, including former Wales flanker James Davies, has played a significant role in honing his skills. Mee's impressive performances at Scarlets caught the attention of former Wales head coach Warren Gatland, leading to his selection for the Six Nations squad.

Family Support and Welsh Roots

Mee's Welsh connection is through his mother, Karen, who hails from Newport. His father, Tony, was a major influence on his rugby career until his passing in 2022. Mee's family, including his mother and two brothers, were present at the Principality Stadium to witness his debut against Ireland.

International Debut and Future Prospects

Mee's debut was marked by an assured performance, including 69 metres made from 13 carries, two clean breaks, and six defenders beaten. Although a try was ruled out by the TMO, Mee's potential was evident. Reflecting on his rapid rise, Mee said, 'It's gone so quick since I started rugby. I only played Championship rugby a year ago now, so to be able to pull on the Welsh shirt was an unbelievable feeling.'

Looking Ahead

Mee is focused on continuing to build his career and making a lasting impact in international rugby. His journey is a testament to hard work, raw talent, and the support of his family and coaches. As he continues to develop, Mee is poised to become a key player for Wales in the years to come.
