Matthew Selt Faces Suspended Ban for Aggressive Conduct at 2024 Saudi Arabia Masters

Matthew Selt received a three-month suspended ban and a £10,000 fine for aggressive behavior during the 2024 Saudi Arabia Masters.

Matthew Selt, a renowned figure in the world of professional snooker, has been handed a three-month suspended ban alongside a £10,000 fine due to his rude and aggressive behavior at the 2024 Saudi Arabia Masters. This disciplinary action was issued by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) following an incident during the tournament held in Riyadh earlier in September.

Details of the Incident

During the fourth round match against China's Pang Junxu, Selt’s frustration boiled over after he missed a straightforward pot, leading to a 5-3 defeat. The Englishman, ranked 30th in the world, was reported to have shown aggressive demeanor and used inappropriate language towards an executive from the tournament promoter Matchroom and another member of the WPBSA. Furthermore, allegations included sending an abusive text message to a fellow WPBSA member.

The Fallout

Selt, who also serves as the vice-chairman of the WPBSA players’ association, accepted all charges brought against him and issued a full and heartfelt apology to the individuals affected. The WPBSA, acknowledging the stresses and pressures Selt was under at the time, stated that the suspended ban would be triggered if any further breaches of conduct occur before the 2025-26 season concludes. In addition to the fine, Selt was ordered to cover £11,000 of the WPBSA's legal costs.

What This Means for Selt

This incident not only marks a significant blemish on Selt's career but also serves as a reminder of the high behavioral standards expected by the WPBSA. Players are ambassadors of the sport, and such conduct can have long-lasting repercussions on their professional image and relationships within the snooker community.
