Colin Turkington's Pause: A BTCC Legend Reflects on an Illustrious Career

Four-time BTCC champion Colin Turkington announces a hiatus from the 2025 season, reflecting on his storied career and the future of his racing journey.

Four-time British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington has announced that he will miss the 2025 BTCC season, marking a significant pause in his illustrious racing career. Turkington, who has been a dominant figure in the series, revealed that a combination of personal and professional factors influenced this decision.

Career Highlights and Achievements

Turkington's career is nothing short of legendary. With four BTCC titles (2009, 2014, 2018, 2019), 72 race wins, and 192 podiums, he has etched his name into the annals of motorsport history. Additionally, he has clinched five Independent Drivers' championships, showcasing his versatility and consistency on the track.

The Decision to Step Away

At 42, Turkington feels the time is right to take a step back. 'For now, I don’t know if that is it for good – but I look back with huge pride at the amazing career I’ve had since debuting as a fresh-faced teenager from Northern Ireland in 2002,' he said. 'I cannot imagine having sacrificed any more or working any harder, leaving me with absolutely no regrets.'

Legacy and Impact

Turkington's contributions to BTCC and his partnership with West Surrey Racing (WSR) have been monumental. Dick Bennetts, WSR's team principal, described their collaboration as 'the greatest in BTCC history.' Despite the commercial challenges that led to his departure, Bennetts expressed hope for a future return.

Memories and Reflections

Turkington fondly recalls the support of his family and the unforgettable moments on the track. 'Driving into parc ferme and seeing the happy faces on Mum and Dad, Louise [his wife], [sons] Lewis and Adam are the memories I cherish most and will take with me forever,' he shared.

What's Next?

While his future in BTCC remains uncertain, Turkington is content with his achievements and looks forward to being 'an enthusiastic fan of the series once again.' His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of racers.
