Joe Saumarez Smith, the esteemed former chairman of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), has sadly passed away at the age of 53. His death follows a valiant struggle against lung cancer, which recently spread to his brain. Saumarez Smith stepped down from his role just last month.

Saumarez Smith joined the BHA board in December 2014 as a non-executive director and ascended to the chairmanship in March 2022. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to the governance, administration, and regulation of British horse racing.

Brant Dunshea, acting chief executive of the BHA, expressed deep sorrow: "It has been a great privilege to have known and worked with Joe, always providing wise counsel and tremendous support to the BHA team and to me personally, and for that we will be forever grateful."

David Jones, interim BHA chair, also paid tribute: "Joe's enthusiasm for the sport shone through in everything he did. He had such a deep knowledge of all aspects of the industry and I and other board colleagues will really miss his insight."
