AI Agents Can't Yet Hand Work to Strangers — A2A Is the Open Protocol Changing That

The open protocol gives AI agents a way to discover each other, message, and coordinate work across systems — a job distinct from MCP's, and a bet on interoperability.

The hardest problem in enterprise AI is no longer getting a single model to reason. It is getting two autonomous programs, built by different teams on different stacks, to so much as acknowledge each other. Agent2Agent — A2A for short — is an open protocol built for exactly that gap: it gives AI agents a standard way to discover one another, exchange messages, and coordinate work across systems. Strip away the acronym and the proposition is blunt — agents that can find each other can divide work between themselves.

Three verbs carry the design: discover, message, coordinate. In practice that is a handshake, a conversation, and a division of labor between pieces of software that have never met.

Why interoperable agents matter comes down to what interoperability historically does: it turns isolated capabilities into infrastructure. An agent sealed inside one vendor's environment is a feature. An agent that can locate counterparties, carry on a message exchange, and coordinate tasks back and forth across systems starts to behave like a participant in a network. A2A's cross-system reach is the tell — the protocol is explicitly aimed at coordination that crosses boundaries rather than stopping at one provider's edge, and it ships as an open specification rather than a proprietary integration.

Any serious discussion of A2A now collides with MCP, and the two names will keep appearing together. They are distinct protocols with different jobs, and telling them apart — what each standardizes, and at which point in an agent architecture — has become baseline knowledge for anyone building these systems. The common error is treating the comparison as either/or. The real value of asking how A2A differs from MCP is mapping where one protocol's responsibility ends and the other's begins.

For buyers, the signal is directional rather than transactional: the industry is standardizing how agents interconnect, not merely how they are built. If A2A secures adoption, agents stop behaving as features locked inside someone else's product and start operating as peers on a shared network. At that point, interoperability stops being a protocol detail and becomes a procurement criterion.
