12,000 GPUs in Plain Sight — and a High-Severity NVIDIA Bug in the Tool Watching Them

October 8 research from Lava shows how observability tooling quietly inventories AI infrastructure for anyone looking — and how the same software can become an availability risk.

AI clusters tell on themselves. Research published on October 8 by the security firm Lava documents roughly 2,100 NVIDIA DCGM Exporter hosts reachable from the public internet, collectively reporting on more than 12,000 unique GPUs — an accidental census of private compute capacity that nobody meant to publish.

DCGM Exporter functions as NVIDIA's bridge between GPU hardware and the operations teams that depend on it, publishing telemetry meant for internal dashboards. When the endpoint is exposed rather than sealed off, the report notes, it may disclose which GPUs a server holds, how hard they are running, and the software surrounding them. Read that way, an open host is a reconnaissance roadmap: hardware mix, workload intensity and stack details, all available to anyone who knows where to look, no intrusion required.

Lava's second finding raises the stakes. The October 8 research also describes a high-severity flaw in the NVIDIA monitoring service itself — a bug that can turn what the endpoint reveals into a threat to availability.

The pairing is what lifts this beyond a routine exposure audit. An unsecured endpoint leaks information; a severe vulnerability in the software producing that information turns passive leakage into a potential operational hazard. Teams running GPU fleets now face a two-sided problem — the telemetry itself sketches out their capacity, and the tool generating it carries a flaw rated serious enough to demand attention. For anyone tracking GPU infrastructure economics, the episode underlines that the operational layer wrapped around accelerators, not just the silicon, belongs inside the security perimeter.

Lava released both findings on October 8. Between the roughly 2,100 exposed hosts and the flaw in the service they run, the research offers exposed operators an uncomfortable picture of what their monitoring may already be telling the world.
