Eight of every ten dollars projected to land on NFL betting this season are still forecast to stay with traditional sportsbooks — and the remaining one-fifth is the number quietly dividing a $40.5 billion market between two rival channels.

A forecast of about 20% of NFL betting this season treats the format as a genuine claimant to a fifth of football's wagering volume, not an experiment at the margins. It frames the two channels as dividing the same pool of bets rather than merely coexisting around it — a split with a clear boundary and a measurable dollar value on each side.
The arithmetic also prices the contest ahead. Each point of share on a $40.5 billion base is worth roughly $405 million, which is why the one-fifth already conceded to prediction markets makes the incumbents' retention rate the split worth tracking as the season plays out.
