Underneath the fresh badge, the DXP8800 Ultra shares its bones with the DXP8800 Plus; the real question for storage buyers is whether incremental silicon justifies a much bigger invoice.
The sharpest takeaway from TechRadar's hands-on with Ugreen's NASync DXP8800 Ultra is not a benchmark figure but a family resemblance: the company's network-attached storage appliance is, in substance, the DXP8800 Plus fitted with a newer Intel processor and a higher memory ceiling — and priced much more aggressively.
That is the entire delta. Everything else carries over from the Plus.
The concentration of those upgrades is telling. In a storage appliance, the processor and the memory ceiling are the two specifications that decide how much work a chassis can absorb beyond basic file serving — heavier application loads, more demanding multi-user traffic, larger working sets held in memory. By refreshing exactly those two levers and leaving the platform otherwise untouched, Ugreen is framing the Ultra as a headroom play: the same machine, with more capacity to grow into. Whether that headroom earns its keep against the price gap is the question the review's framing places squarely in front of prospective buyers.
The pricing decision deserves its own scrutiny. Charging considerably more for a derivative refresh is a wager that enough buyers will pay up for incremental silicon rather than settle for the platform it is derived from. It also, by implication, repositions the DXP8800 Plus as the value pick — the box for buyers whose workloads never brush against the older processor's limits or the smaller memory ceiling. For that group, the Ultra's premium buys nothing they will ever feel.
For AI-compute watchers the relevance is indirect but recognizable: across many hardware categories, memory capacity is the natural upsell lever, and a storage vendor leaning on a higher ceiling to justify a higher sticker price is a small, legible instance of that pattern.
The arithmetic is straightforward. If a workload needs the newer Intel part or the extra memory headroom, the Ultra is the only machine in the pair that offers them. If it does not, the Plus does the same job for much less money.
