Linux's reputation for safety can breed complacency — ZDNet's contributor frames eight personally vetted practices as the gap between stock defenses and real protection.
Eight habits. That, in the view of one longtime Linux advocate writing at ZDNet, is the full distance between the operating system's stock defenses and personal data that is genuinely safe.
The publication has laid out a privacy checklist built on that premise, and its argument is disarmingly simple: Linux earns its security reputation by default, but a secure-by-default posture is a floor, not a ceiling. The eight tips the author 'swears by' are framed as the extra mile — deliberate steps that carry users beyond what the distribution does on its own. Even the headline carries editorial weight: 'yes, you need them.' That phrasing reads as a rebuke to the complacency a hardened reputation can breed, suggesting many users mistake the platform's baseline protections for a finished privacy strategy.
That insistence is the sharpest claim in the piece. Security inherited from the operating system, in this framing, still leaves the individual answerable for their own data.
The article lands in a familiar genre — practitioner advice rather than product news — but the tension underneath it is real. An operating system can ship strong safeguards; it cannot configure a person's behavior. By packaging the guidance as eight discrete, personally tested practices rather than an abstract security doctrine, the piece argues that privacy on Linux is an ongoing discipline of choices, not a one-time installation decision. The 'extra mile' language is doing precise work here: existing security is credited first, then declared insufficient on its own, a pairing that avoids both alarmism and false comfort.
For anyone treating an open-source platform as a privacy guarantee out of the box, the checklist's message is blunt — the guarantee stops where the user's own effort begins.
