The company is developing a pair of fresh capabilities for its meeting platform, both aimed at catching third-party deepfakes in the act. The target is the synthetic stand-in: a fabricated participant built to pass as a genuine attendee on a live call. The wording matters, because 'third-party' locates the threat outside the organization's own stack — fakes produced by external actors and carried into the morning meeting rather than anything misgenerated inside Teams. Microsoft's stated aim is to iron out impersonation, an abuse category that has shadowed collaboration software as video calls turned into de facto boardrooms.
The counterintuitive datapoint is the direction of travel: attacks on Teams are decreasing, yet the problem persists. Microsoft evidently judges the residual risk serious enough to warrant dedicated detection engineering instead of relying on user vigilance alone.
