$445M Series D Bets Enterprises Want to Own the Cloud, Not Rent It

Eclipse led the October 9 round, joined by returning backers US Innovative Technology Fund, Riot Ventures and Jane Street, as Oxide scales its hardware-plus-open-source stack for customer-owned facilities.

Four hundred forty-five million dollars now sits behind a contrarian wager: that enterprises would rather own their cloud than rent it.

Oxide Computer Company announced the $445 million Series D on October 9, with Eclipse leading the round. Existing backers came back for more — the US Innovative Technology Fund, Riot Ventures and Jane Street all participated. That continuity carries weight at this stage of a company's life: Series D capital usually chases proven commercial mechanics rather than untested theses, and returning investors are best positioned to judge the difference.

The product at the center of the raise is an integrated computing system that fuses hardware with open-source software, packaged as infrastructure the customer outright owns. The pitch inverts the standard cloud arrangement. Instead of renting capacity from a remote operator, enterprises buy the cloud experience itself and run it inside their own facilities, on equipment that stays on their side of the wall.

That framing points to the tension this round is really about. Public cloud won the past decade on operational polish — elastic provisioning, managed services, metered billing — while enterprises surrendered physical control in exchange. Oxide's proposition is that buyers should not have to make that trade: get the cloud experience, keep the assets. For AI-compute buyers weighing owned infrastructure against rented capacity, the ownership model carries obvious appeal — hardware lifecycles stay in-house, per-hour premiums disappear, and capacity can be planned rather than negotiated. Whether that trade broadens beyond early adopters is the question a newly capitalized Oxide will now be pressed to answer.

The company's task with $445 million in hand is to scale that ownership proposition — and to prove enterprise-owned cloud is a category, not a niche.
