The 1.92TB NVMe drive pairs high endurance with strong sustained writes and low 4KB random latency for NAS duty, but Tom's Hardware finds the bill lands on the buyer.
Endurance sells, but it does not come cheap. That is the tension running through Tom's Hardware's review of the Sandisk NAS 800, a 1.92TB drive that clears nearly every performance bar a network-attached storage builder could set — and then asks buyers to pay for it.
The NAS 800 is a high-end PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD engineered for NAS workloads, and the review's findings track that purpose directly. Tom's Hardware credits the drive with high endurance, strong sustained write performance and low 4KB random latency — a combination that reads less like a consumer headline-chaser and more like a component specified for storage duty, where drives are expected to absorb continuous write traffic and serve mixed access patterns.
Each of those attributes maps onto a specific NAS requirement. Endurance addresses the reality of drives running write-heavy duty around the clock. Sustained write performance matters for large, uninterrupted transfer jobs — backups, media libraries, bulk migrations — where throughput has to hold steady rather than spike and collapse. Low 4KB random latency, meanwhile, is the metric that keeps file service responsive when many small reads and writes arrive at once.
The drawback is singular and clear: price. Tom's Hardware identifies the NAS 800's high cost as the main factor holding it back.
For the target buyer, the calculus is legible. Organizations standing up write-intensive NAS environments get a PCIe 5.0 option purpose-built for the job, with the endurance and latency profile to match. Buyers with lighter workloads have a harder case to make: a premium-priced drive earns its keep only when the workload actually stresses what it was built to endure.
The review's bottom line is a rare one in component testing — a drive with little wrong except what it costs.
