An open call — no brief, no disclosed timeline — puts the release's visual identity in submitters' hands, a glimpse of how open-source projects make even aesthetic decisions.
The next release of Debian will carry artwork made by whoever submits it. The project has put out a formal call for artist submissions for the release it has codenamed Forky, and selected pieces are in line to be featured when the distribution ships.
The call, reported by Ars Technica in October 2026, is brief on specifics: Debian Linux wants artist submissions for Forky, and artwork drawn from the resulting pool could appear in the release itself. The report includes none of the practicalities — no deadline, no judging panel, no prize — which leaves the questions prospective contributors will actually ask wide open: who selects the work, and against what criteria.
The brevity is arguably the point.
For a distribution, release art is among the most-seen surfaces it produces — imagery that typically shows up in installers, on desktops and in announcement posts, giving each cycle a recognizable identity. Whatever visual language Forky's chosen pieces establish will define how the release reads from day one, which turns even a modest call for art into a de facto branding decision. The word 'featured' in the framing hints at curation rather than a single winner: multiple submissions may make the cut, handing artists the rare credit of living inside a finished open-source release.
For readers of a compute-focused desk, the item is small — which is precisely what makes it telling. The software stacks that eventually run on accelerators are assembled, at their foundations, by communities that source even their aesthetics through open invitations. Debian's call is a compact window into how that layer operates: no procurement cycle, no agency retainer, just a public request awaiting a review.
Submissions are open as of the October call. What Forky ultimately looks like is anyone's guess — by design.
