Legendary Trainer D. Wayne Lukas Triumphs Over COVID-19 and Returns to Churchill Downs
Renowned horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas shares his battle with COVID-19 and his inspiring return to Churchill Downs, emphasizing the importance of pandemic safety.

D. Wayne Lukas, a legendary figure in the horse racing world, has made a triumphant return to his barn at Churchill Downs after a harrowing battle with COVID-19. The four-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer, who celebrated his 85th birthday recently, revealed the severity of his illness, stating, "I couldn't get any air, and I felt like I was drifting away. You just wish you could get one breath."
Despite taking extensive precautions such as wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, and avoiding dining out, Lukas contracted the virus. His wife, who cared for him during his illness, tested negative twice, which Lukas found surprising. "You would've thought for sure she'd get it," he remarked. Now, he feels significantly better than he did a month ago and is back to work, accompanying his horses to the track.
Lukas, who has 14 Triple Crown victories and over $282 million in purse earnings, urged others to take the pandemic seriously. "I see people taking it lightly, and I think it's a mistake, whether they're my age or 20," he said. "I'd wear my mask. I wouldn't tempt fate."
Known for his remarkable career that includes 4,839 career victories and 49 starts in the Kentucky Derby (the second most in history), Lukas has no entry in this year's Derby. His last Derby runner was two years ago. However, his presence at Churchill Downs continues to inspire the horse racing community, reminding everyone of the resilience and dedication required in this sport.
