Djokovic Reflects on Mutual Coaching Split with Murray Ahead of French Open

Novak Djokovic discusses the mutual decision to end his coaching partnership with Andy Murray, reflecting on their time together and his current form ahead of the French Open.

Novak Djokovic has opened up about the mutual decision to end his coaching partnership with Andy Murray, emphasizing that both players were on the same page regarding the split. The Serbian tennis star, who recently claimed his 100th ATP tournament title in Geneva, shared his thoughts on the partnership and his current form as he prepares for the French Open.

Mutual Decision

Djokovic, 38, revealed that the decision to part ways with Murray was mutual. "We both wanted to have a call and to speak, so we -- actually, we both were on the same page," Djokovic said. "It was not his initiative or my initiative. It was both of us coming together and just saying, I think we should stop here."

Reflection on Partnership

Despite the lack of desired results, Djokovic expressed gratitude for the experience. "For him to join my team and for us to give a shot to this player-coach relationship was really an incredible thing for tennis and for both of us," he said. "I was very privileged and honored. I was enjoying myself very much regardless of the fact that we haven't had maybe the success we both wanted or people expected us to have."

Current Form

Djokovic is looking to regain his form after a challenging start to 2025, which saw early exits in the Madrid Open, the Monte-Carlo Masters, and Indian Wells. His recent victory in Geneva has provided a much-needed boost. "That win was much needed for my game," Djokovic admitted.

Nadal's Farewell

Djokovic also reflected on Rafael Nadal's recent farewell ceremony, where he stood alongside Murray and Roger Federer. "It was an emotional occasion," Djokovic said. "I was thinking about my end of the road as well. Part of me is proud that I'm still there, that I'm still going, but at the same time, I was, and I still am a bit sad that they're all gone."

Looking Ahead

As Djokovic gears up for the French Open, he remains focused on his game and future in tennis. "I do wish one day that I can get the kind of goodbye from the world of tennis, for sure," he said. "But I didn't think about the exact date."

Djokovic's first match at the French Open will be against Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday, as he continues his quest for another Grand Slam title.
