Caroline Garcia Announces Retirement: A Farewell to Tennis at the French Open

Caroline Garcia, a former US Open semifinalist, announces her retirement from tennis, marking her final appearance at the French Open.

PARIS -- Caroline Garcia, a celebrated figure in the world of tennis and a former US Open semifinalist, has announced her retirement from professional tennis. As she gears up for her 14th consecutive appearance at the French Open, Garcia shared her heartfelt decision on social media, stating, "It's time to say goodbye."

Garcia, who has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the world, reflected on her 15-year career, which has been filled with both triumphs and challenges. "After 15 years competing at the highest level, and over 25 years devoting almost every second of my life to this sport, I feel ready to turn the page and open a new chapter," she said. "That said, it's not quite over yet. I still have a few tournaments to play. The first one, at home, at Roland-Garros."

Currently ranked No. 145, Garcia is set to face Bernarda Pera in the first round of the French Open. Her journey has been marked by significant achievements, including 11 titles and a semifinal appearance at the US Open. However, her career has also been marred by injuries and personal struggles. In March 2022, Garcia took a break from tennis to recover from a foot injury, which led to a remarkable comeback later that year, culminating in several titles and a strong performance at the WTA Finals.

Garcia has also been open about her battles with bulimia, which she revealed in an interview with L'Equipe newspaper two years ago. The condition was triggered by the stress of losses and the pain from her lingering foot injury, which significantly impacted her daily life.

"My journey hasn't always been easy," Garcia admitted. "Since the beginning, tennis has meant so much more than wins and losses. It was love or hate. Joy or frustration. And despite everything, I'm deeply grateful for all that this adventure has brought me. For everything tennis has given me. For the strong, passionate, and determined woman it helped me become. But now, it's time to move on. My body -- and my personal aspirations -- are telling me so."

As Garcia prepares to bid farewell to the sport she has dedicated her life to, fans and fellow players alike will undoubtedly celebrate her remarkable career and the indelible mark she has left on the world of tennis.
